The US Premiere of Kaija Saariaho's Émilie

sp11-WEB-elizabeth-futral-annex-150The historical figure Emilie du Chatelet is the subject of Kaija Saariaho's opera Émilie.  The French noblewoman was a respected mathematician and physicist, and translated works of Isaac Newton that remain the definitive French text to this day.  The production at Spoleto features soprano Elizabeth Futral in a tour-de-force performance of the monodrama, sharing the stage only with a multimedia-rich set design.
